Things That Go In But Won't Come Out

Sophie has never met a food she didn't like. Peas? Perfect for finger painting her high chair tray. Pieces of plain pasta? Look wonderful hanging from her chin.

So, what's the problem? With three meals and two or three 8-ounce bottles a day going in, you would think something would be coming out, right? Wrong! At least not since Saturday.

I have tried. Oh, how I have tried:
*No bananas, no rice, no white bread
*An extra 4-ounce bottle of water
*Bicycling her legs
*Increasing fruits and veggies
*Prune juice diluted with water
*Prune juice straight fed by a medicine dropper
*Yogurt

Any other ideas? Anything I might be over looking?

Nope! Just wait for the explosion! Harry used to go ten days at a time, and after numerous doctor visits, I accepted that he was just the way he was (he never cried, or acted like he was uncomfortable, or even had hard stools when they did come out) and left him to it. The only problem was that he'd usually let rip when we were out and and I was down to my last three diaper wipes. So if you go out, stock up and take a change of clothes (possibly for both of you...)

aww how frustrating for you both. I have no experience in that department and it sounds like you have tried the obvious. Maybe just keep the fluids up and let nature take its course!

Oh no. Not fun.

Bicycling her legs? Hmm. Never heard of that.

My 3-year old sometimes won't go for two days. My wife gives him bananas. Sometimes prune juice.

I have another way, though. I wait. It'll come out.

Laws of nature, I always tell myself.

this has always been a problem for one of my girls but not the other. we've tried lots of different things and have found that grapes work great - you'd have to cut them in quarters or halves at her age. strawberries also help. prune juice and prunes and bananas never work for her. apple juice is another thing that works for some kids - not mine, but i know others.

if it continues to be a problem, you might want to keep a list of what she eats when and when this is a problem. it could be simple, like one food. or it could simply be the way she's made.

your doctor will have some stuff you can give her, too.

i know this is so hard for momma!!!

my babes have been having the same problem and I have been using flax seed oil. It always worked for Lilli so we will see if we have any "results" this week. . .

Also, I've heard that apples and apple juice can be constipating for some because of the pectin. . .

My oldest has always had constipation issues and is now on Miralax for it. Gerber makes a Pear with Blueberries that worked sometimes. My other two need only straight apple juice to loosen things up. Good luck! I know that it's frustrating!
