WFMW III Rice Pillows

Rice pillows have found so many uses at our house, I don't know how we survived without them. The smaller one was made by my older sister and the smaller one was purchased from E-bay.

They can be used hot or cold and with supervision even on babies. The smaller on, when warm is good for easing headaches used on the forehead, back of the neck or over the eyes. When cooled in the freezer or refrigerator, it is good for reducing fevers (on the forehead or even on the back of the neck when sleeping) and taking the ouch out of bug bites, bee stings and boo-boos.

When Sophie was a newborn, I used the large rice pillow to warm her bed or to help warm her during those late night, winter feedings. When she was gassy, I placed it warmed across her tummy and she would relax within a few minutes. Bailey also uses this one when he has a stomach ache. I have also used it on long car rides or plane rides to put in the small of my back for support. It supports so much better than a pillow and makes sitting for long periods of time more bearable. Also nice for menstrual cramps.

Rice pillows, they work for us. Head on over to Rocks In My Dryer for more tips!

Okay, how do you make these? And how do you warm one up? Love the idea! :)

Oh, and you could also make little ones to be used as bean bags for games. :)

Trisha - I have never heard of Rice Pillows! I will have to make some!

Thank you for visiting my blog and for your comment. "My Story" is very heartbreaking in and of itself ~ but when viewed through God's eyes, it becomes amazing :)

I've been given several of these as gifts, and at first I was like, umm thanks for the bag of rice in some fabric, but they are some of the best presents I've ever gotten because they come in handy for so many aches and pains. I can't wait to try freezing them. Thanks for the idea.

one of my friends gave me a heart shaped rice pillow as a going away gift when I left Kentucky for Ohio...I've used it for minor muscle aches and pains...it stays warm just the right amount of time...I never thought of using it for cramps...thanks for sharing that!

I bought one of these for an outrageous amount of money. I has been worth its weight on gold, we've used it so much.

But I wish I'd thought to make one instead. Smart move on your part!

I need to get a couple of these. One of my little guys gets quite a few headaches and we have bumps and scrapes everyday.

someone asked how to warm them up - i stick it in the microwave for a minute or two (depending on the size)... if your microwave has a tendency to gather bacon grease and other nasties on the bottom - just stick the rice bag on a plate and pop it in.

they are so easy to make - i prefer to use flannel for them, so you get the fuzzy comfort. never tried fleece - wonder how that would work.

never tried freezing them, though!!

Great idea...I teach my patients to use a zipper type bag and fill it 3/4 full of whole grain uncooked rice and then pop it in the freezer for post-op pain relief. I keep one in the freezer in case I break a toe. [I've only broken the same toe 6 times and one other toe once.]

We used to tell them peas but they would get gross after awhile. Love your tip. :0]
