Trisha, when I was growing up in Colorado, if we'd drive to the mountains (which was a pretty short drive from Denver). There were always horse rentals for 30 minutes or an hour (your choice how long you'd like to rent them for). You could take them up a few nice trails, they could drink from a creek. It was affordable and I have many pictures of myself that my parents took of me riding as a child.
