Perfect Should Be A Four Letter Word

They were both nicely dressed. He in khakis and a blue button up. She in a flowered patterned dress that stretched over her stomach. She rubbed her stomach like all pregnant woman do and smiled lovingly at her husband. I watched as they held hands across the table and poured over a baby catalog, trying to decide which baby bed was the cutest or which car seat looked the safest. So happy, so excited, so anxious to meet their new little baby.

I could almost see the dreams that were filling their heads- from those first accomplishments of babyhood to seeing their child marry and start a family of their own. It would all be perfect......

Good lord, the pretty, flowered one thought, what is that noise? When this baby is born I will never allow her/him to act that way in public!

I followed her gaze and realized she was starring open mouthed at our table where Bailey was crying because he didn't have anymore potatoes and where Sophie had just knocked over a glass of water and was banging the table with tiny, clenched fists.

And I smiled right back because I know what they don't yet, nothing is ever perfect. Little ones act up, plans go awry and the only thing that you can do about it is smile and know that it will pass. And when all else fails ask for a doggy bag and head for the hills.

Reminds me of something I read somewhere about pre-chilren you hear a toddler throwing a tantrum and think, "That poor child! Can't the mother see that he is overtired?" etc. and then post-children you hear the same shrieking melt down and think "that POOR woman!"
