The moment a child is born, the mother is also born. She never existed before. The woman existed, but the mother, never. A mother is something absolutely new. ~Rajneesh

Update
I can hear them talking from where I sit in the computer room.
It is not going well. Mother and son hashing it out for almost an hour now.
Guilt falls and settles around me. How could something meant to be good turn out so bad?
How are you today? I hope that things got sorted out and that you feel less upset today. Try not to let this spoil the rest of Christmas for you - YOUR little family will appreciate what you do for them!
My husband (Japanese) just told me last night that we shouldn't buy gifts for his niece and nephew either. I said, "But it is Christmas!" Your MIL's perspective helped me understand it a little better. It does make Christmas kind of empty.
